Derive a GTIN-14 (optional)
Use this when you're labelling a case, inner pack or pallet — not the individual consumer unit.
The same product gets a different GTIN at each packaging level. A single bottle of shampoo has one GTIN, a box of 12 bottles has another, a pallet of 48 boxes another again. That way a scanner instantly knows whether it just received 1 unit or 576, without anyone opening the carton to count.
The packaging indicator is the digit that tells scanners which level this label is for. It prefixes your EAN-13 and we recalculate the check digit for you. GS1 reserves the digit values; the meaning of 1, 2, 3… is your own convention (typically inner → carton → case → pallet).
